What's New as of Nov 2018
vdR is now a Gold Partner. Thank you for all your help along the way. This is great affirmation of our efforts and investment in our Aras relationship. We are more energized than ever to help grow Aras’ annual recurring revenue (ARR) and can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store.
Growing The PLM Team
We’re excited to announce Zack Robertson and Phil Nguyen joined vdR’s PLM practice in October.
As a dedicated technical project manager, Zack comes to vdR with a background in Aras Innovator with configuration, coding, and project management. He’s applied his skills in various industries including the automotive space.
Phil comes to vdR with a background in coding and web development and will be focused on PLM technical implementations. Earlier in October he spent two weeks training in Andover and has hit the ground on several projects.
Is Aras the PLM Solution for Growing Startups?
Over the last year, we’ve gotten traction with a number of fast-growing, VC financed startups. When asked about why they’re attracted to Aras, we hear the same theme: Aras Innovator seemed like the quickest PLM solution to implement and would be responsive to fast-paced change and growth. We couldn’t agree more!
Aras Innovator is the PLM for fast-growing startups that need enterprise capabilities and change control while not stifling innovation or needing drawn-out implementations. When working with these companies, we reinforce that idea that selecting the right foundation (e.g. PLM platform) is the single most important decision to ensure healthy growth and scalability.
It’s been rewarding to see this first had at accounts like Planet Labs, Caltex, Capella Space, and others. Planet recently set the record for launching the most satellites in a single launch and is on track to have the largest private fleet of LEO (low earth orbit) satellites. Caltex is working on dramatically reducing the risks and impact of hydraulic fracturing. Capella Space is revolutionizing earth imaging by introducing a fleet of micro satellites allowing for an hourly updated image of the entire globe that is unaffected by atmospheric interferences like cloud cover. It’s exciting to see Aras Innovator help support these exciting advancements.
Growing Momentum with Automotive Suppliers
As I believe many of you know, Lloyd Rogers came on earlier this year as a dedicated technical account manager (TAM) focused on automotive suppliers. He has over 30 years of experience at various suppliers in rolls ranging from engineering and project managements to sales and plant management.
The TAM approach has been a home run. Lloyd creates immediate credibility and truly understands the challenges suppliers face. As he has developed a deeper knowledge of Aras Innovator, he’s been able to “own” the solution opportunities and communicate them to our prospects.
One of Lloyd more notable wins this year includes, Continental Structural Plastics (CSP). Given Lloyd’s local presence (he works out of the Aras Troy office alongside Sam Abu Hamdan and others), he has been able to nurture CSP along. CSP has been evaluating Aras Innovator for over two (2) years. In August we closed a small implementation effort. This has since progressed to subscription and a significant service opportunity.Lloyd anticipates closing these up in Q4 2018.Along with CSP, Lloyd is driving an exciting pipeline for 2019.
Solution Highlight – Making Sense of Unstructured Data
Over the past several years, vdR has sought to represent the Aras Innovator solution to companies in the engineering, construction and manufacturing space. Along the way, it is becoming clear that relevant data has settled into three categories … unstructured, legacy applications and database-oriented applications such as home-grown Access apps, PDM and even PLM. Of course, Aras Innovator offers a breath of fresh air to the weary workers trying to corral the data and establish repeatable processes.
But the reality is, even with Aras Innovator in place, the amount of unstructured data continues to grow unabated. In fact, check the chart out below …
Admittedly, the data is a few years old. But the underlying message is clear - unstructured data is exploding. Even as powerful as Aras Innovator is, it stills feeling like we’re trying to empty to pool with a teaspoon.
That is what vdR is looking to address. Is there a so-called “PLM 360” opportunity? Is there something that can help organizations unlock the insights, experiences, expertise and ultimately the intellectual property that’s trapped elsewhere.
Is the answer big data, data warehousing, intelligent data lakes, AI, machine learning, etc.? Maybe it’s a combo play? However, the bigger question is what existing platforms are equipped to ingest such data and make it useful and turn it into repeatable processes. (Hint) We’re obviously biased. Stay tuned … something is in the works.
New Subscribers and Renewals
Azimuth - New Subscriber
Azimuth is a leading electronic engineering firm that works closely with the Department of Defense (DoD) and other federal agencies. vdR is helping implement Aras’ core modules along with CAD connectors ensuring they get the most out of the subscription capabilities.
Caltex - New Subscriber
They manufacture “down hole” instruments that minimize ecological and monetary loss in the event of well failure or emergency shutoff. Caltex is a startup division of a much larger organization which represents significant opportunity for vdR going forward.
CSP - New Subscriber
After exploring Aras over the last two years, CSP has chosen Aras and, as of October 2018, is a subscriber. Aras Innovator will be supporting numerous solutions focused on supplier management, transmittables, quoting, APQP management, CAPA, PFMEAs, and more.
POET - Renewal
POET is one of the world’s largest producers of ethanol and other bio-refined products. As a renewable energy leader, POET does their own in house chemical and engineering R&D, plant design, and equipment maintenance.
New Engagements and Pilots
In addition to helping support our subscribers, we’re also engaged with other accounts to nurture them toward subscription. This usually takes the form of pilots or building out non-OOTB Aras capabilities to ensure value is demonstrated.
Capella Space - Aerospace
While on their journey to subscription, Capella has engaged with us to build out a replicated vaulting solution across multiple locations coupled with document management, CAD connectors, and parts & BOM management.
Prefab Logic - Prefab Manufacturing
Prefab Logic has pioneered a game-changing approach to modular home manufacturing. vdR is working with them to showcase the power of Aras’ manufacturing process planning (MPP) and technical documentation capabilities.
Optosigma - Optics
We’ve been working with Optosigma on an engineer-to-order (ETO) quoting solutions. This has been an opportunity to showcase the power of Aras as the supporting platform coupled with the new variants and options capabilities.

BTO, ETO, and Tiered Suppliers
vdR is specifically focused on build-to-order (BTO) and engineering-to-order (ETO) manufacturers and automotive suppliers. This specialty area is denoted in Figure 1 as the area with a high degree of custom engineering. However, we do occasionally work with build-to-stock (BTS), assemble-to-order (ATO), and configure-to-order (CTO) manufacturers.
vdR’s target audiences are characterized by a common need to capture the product lifecycle, starting at the quote and continuing with advanced project management activities that see the order through delivery and support.
In addition to helping manufacturers address the “PLM Basic 5” needs of parts, BOMs, documents, drawings, and change management, vdR is adding vertical functionality as noted below.
